Sausage flowers

The Sausage trees are flowering madly at the moment. Their fat, leathery, deep-red flowers provide food for a whole number of creatures from lovebirds and monkeys to impala and puku. It is wonderful to just sit and watch the steady stream of animals coming and going.

Hippo threatens lion

This lioness was lying down next to a lagoon when the resident hippo decided he didn’t like her there and came out of the water to see her off! He walked right up to her, opening his mouth wide open to show off his huge canines. The lioness didn’t seem bothered though and stayed right where she was! Eventually the hippo lost interest and backed down into the water and the lioness casually went back to sleep.

Lions kill buffalo in lagoon

August 19, 2007

The Mwamba pride killed a buffalo in a nearby lagoon yesterday morning. We discovered it a couple of hours after it had happened and what we found was astonishing! There were 20 lions in and around the lagoon as well as a huge flock of maribou storks and yellow-bill storks. The yellow-bill storks were actually scavenging from the kill which is something I have never seen before. Here are a few shots but as usual the small jpegs saved for the web really don’t give a feeling of what it was like.

The Lion camp pride also killed a Zebra about 100 metres on the other side of the camp!

Nature’s Best Competition

These two shots made it to the final round of judging in Nature’s Best Windland Rice Competition but sadly no further. I haven’t entered many competitions in the past but intend to do so more often as it is a great way to get exposure if you win.
