Here come the rains….

November 30, 2007

We have had a lot of rain the last few days – most of it falling in the late afternoon. This is a picture of a huge storm coming in from the east over the Luangwa river. Strangely the river is still dropping and is at the lowest level that it has been all year.

Impala alien!

November 26, 2007

The Impala have been dropping their young for a couple of weeks now. They are quite difficult to photograph, at least in this area, as they are very nervous and run away as soon as they hear my vehicle. I came across this little guy very early this morning and even though his mum ran off he stood there and looked at me for a full minute before following her. Can’t decide if he is cute or ugly – definitely weird looking though!

Grey heron silhouette

November 25, 2007

It has been a very busy week getting things in camp finalised before the rains begin in earnest. Fortunately we have had a dry spell but that seems to be changing with some huge storms building up yesterday and today. The heat is stifling and I can’t wait for the storms to break.

Yellow baboons

November 17, 2007

I spent a wonderful evening yesterday watching a troop of baboons foraging in the last hour before sunset. There was constantly something of interest going on with plenty of fighting and mating! I always try to look for backlighting when photographing baboons as their fur lights up a halo around them and the setting sun was perfect for this.

Storm!

November 14, 2007

_nab7187_web_bg.jpg

This picture looks really impressive large but unfortunately at this size doesn’t look like much. Yesterday evening a huge storm came in from the east and was lit by the setting sun. The light was really beautiful but fleeting as only minutes after taking this photo the storm hit. You can see that the river is still very low although it is starting to inch up gradually…..

Fried egg flower

November 13, 2007

The fried egg (oncoba spinosa) trees in the area have been flowering for a few weeks now. Things have quietened down in terms of mammal photography (since the rains started the animals are no longer tied to the river for water and food and are moving further inland) so I have been concentrating on other stuff – such as flowers and insects. I’m looking forward to the onslaught of bugs that always come with the rains as there really are some weird and wonderful ones. Many of them unrecorded.

There are lots of these little guys around at the moment but they usually run off at high speed as soon as you try to get close. This mother and two young were really relaxed though and I spent a wonderful hour with them – at one point one of the piglets got really nosy and came snuffling up to the wheel of my car.
