Lion cub portrait
July 25, 2009
I have seen the lion cubs everyday for the last week which has been great. They are at a very playful age and are constantly running around and chewing on things. Out of the three there are two females and one male – this one is the male who is already quite a lot larger than his sisters.

Ele in the middle
July 24, 2009
Baby elephants can be difficult to photograph as they often stay hidden away in the centre of the herd where they are safe from predators. I like this image as it shows this behaviour very graphically with the baby elephant surrounded by the larger members of his family.

The boys are back in town
July 17, 2009
The three Mwamba males have been away for a couple of weeks but returned to the area last night. They were spotted on the other side of the river recently and seem to be making a habit of swimming backwards and forwards quite regularly. Hopefully they will stick around for a while…

Lion Cubs
July 8, 2009
A couple nights ago two lionesses killed a young buffalo about two hundred yards from our house. One of them was the lactating female that we have seen in the area recently and in the morning she was at the kill with her three little cubs – very exciting as it was the first sighting I have had of these cubs this season. I thought the aged photo/sepia look suited the images quite well.

The cubs are only about 2 months old and so aren’t eating any meat yet although they are already beginning to learn how. This little fellow got hold of the buffalo’s tail and chewed on that for a while…

Saddle-billed stork
July 7, 2009
This impressive looking bird is a female Saddle-billed stork. The sexes are nearly identical except that the female has a yellow eye whereas the male has a black eye. The male is also larger than the female. It is a huge bird with a wingspan of nearly 9 feet.

Litle Bee-eater
July 6, 2009
The mornings are quite cold at this time of year which makes it easier to approach birds fairly closely as they sit sunning themselves. This is an extreme close-up of one of my favourite birds, the little bee-eater. Check out the blue eyeshadow – very eighties!
