Lion Cubs

The three lion cubs are all alive and well and we are still seeing them every few days – here are a couple of my recent favourite images. The first image was taken just outside camp at dawn.

New bird for the Luangwa valley

Not a terribly exciting photo but it is quite an exciting find. This bird is a Spur-winged Lapwing (Plover) and it hasn’t been recorded here in the Luangwa Valley before. When I first saw it I thought it was the common Blacksmith Lapwing but on closer inspection it was quite obviously different. It has been added to the official list of National Park birds bringing the total number of species that occur here to 460.

Night-time leopard

The leopard sightings this year have not been as good as usual until a couple weeks ago when they suddenly started to improve. This image is of a lovely female that was walking around near camp last night calling for her cub. We stayed with her for at least an hour but there was no sign of the cub..

Eye to eye

This male lion is the largest of the coalition of three brothers. They have been hanging around this area for a few days now along with four females – one being the lioness with her cubs. Another of the females is lactating so it looks like there is a second litter around which is great. I will post some more cub images soon.
