Rivers and rainbows

I recently spent a few fabulous days at Kakuli camp with Norman Carr Safaris where they are currently running their rainy season ‘rivers and rainbows’ safaris. This really is a time of plenty with lush green vegetation and animals looking sleek and fat. Some images:

Before and after

It is the height of the rains and the transformation to the landscape of the Luangwa Valley is striking. It is now the ’emerald season’ and everything is lush and green again. The river swells to bursting at this time of year – these images were taken in the dry and rainy season from roughly the same view points on the riverbank.

Rasta hippo

Hippo carrying nile cabbage

It is a very common sight in the Luangwa to see hippos wandering around with a raft of nile cabbage on their backs. They travel huge distances between water sources, especially in the rains, and in this way transport the plant from one lagoon to another.

Anthills and grass

A very belated Happy New Year! It’s that time of year again when I spend many hours sitting at my computer sorting out and editing images from the past year. This interesting photograph came up in today’s files. I took it from John’s microlight on a long flight inland from the Luangwa river to an area known as Zebra flats.
