Nature’s Best Africa Awards 2016

I’m very pleased to have won two awards at the 2016 Nature’s Best Africa photographic awards. Both are aerial images of elephants – ‘Elephant crossing’ was awarded first runner up in the Art in Nature category and ‘Elephants and egrets’ was highly honoured in the Black and white category. All the winning photographs will be on display at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town until September.

2010 IPA AWARDS

This series of images has been awarded an ‘honourable mention’ in the Nature category of the 2010 International Photography Awards. It is a massive competition and this year’s entries spanned 103 countries worldwide with approximately 15,000 submissions!

The tree is a dead ebony which was washed downstream by the Luangwa in full flood and then deposited in an upright position in the middle of the river. The series of images were taken over a period of a few months in the rainy season whenever I was passing by the tree in the boat. The first image in the series is available for purchase as a fine art print from my website here.

Also receiving awards in the Lifestyle and Environmental categories of the competition were the following two photographs of people – unusual for me!

The first image is of a shepherd called Chinjamba. I knew him when I was a child and he seems to have remained the same age throughout my life – ancient! He always wears a suit jacket to work despite the fact that he is barefooted and in shorts.

This second image was taken during the huge flood that we had in the Luangwa valley in early 2007. I was driving (in about 3 feet of water) past what I thought was a deserted village when I saw this woman emerging from her house with her possessions. I gave her a lift to dry land and she was just in time in clearing out her house as on my return a few hours later the building had collapsed completely…
